Microbiological Studies on Sambhar Lake (Salt of Earth) Rajasthan, India

چکیده
Sambhar Lake (Salt of Earth), the largest inland saline and alkaline lake of India is situated in the state of Rajasthan, and is referred in the epic Mahabharata. When full, it covers an area of 230 sq km. It lays some 60 km west of Jaipur, adjacent to the Salt Lake City. Flocks of flamingoes are attracted by the delicious spirulina algae that flourish when the water reaches a medium degree of salinity. There are many reports on the flora and fauna of this environment; however, there are very few reports on the isolation and characterization of extremely haloalkaliphic microorganisms, especially archaebacteria from Sambhar Lake. We initiated bacteriological studies on this unique hypersaline and alkaline environment in 1984 under the guidance of Moiz F. Mullakhanbhai who alongwith Helge G. Larsen were the first to isolate a moderately halophilic bacterium (Halobacterium volcanii, now Haloferax volcanii). Several strains of red, extremely haloalkaliphilic archaea, have been isolated and characterized from the brine and salt samples. All these strains possessed the diether core lipids, phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidylglycerophosphate (PGP), and bacterioruberins characteristic of halophilic archaea. Strains producing extremozymes (proteases, lipases, etc.) and bacteriocins have been isolated. Halophilic anoxygenic phototrophic sulfur oxidizing bacteria have also been cultivated. Data of our studies will be presented.

Characterization and Optimization of Alkaline Protease Production from Bacillus Licheniformis Hsw-16 Isolated from Sambhar Salt Lake
Halophilic microorganisms are recognized as potential source of secondary metabolites including enzymes and drugs with wide agricultural and industrial applications. In the present study protease producing halotolerant bacterium Bacillus licheniformis HSW-16 was isolated from hypersaline Sambhar lake, Rajasthan India. Protease production was performed by using azocasein as substrate. Confirmati...
متن کاملThe oral health status and the treatment needs of salt workers at sambhar lake, jaipur, India.
BACKGROUND Salt workers are exposed to the adversities of environmental conditions such as direct sunlight, salt dust and contact with brine, which have an impact on the health of workers. Since oral health is an integral part of the general health, we planned to determine its effect on the oral cavity. OBJECTIVES To assess the oral health status and the treatment needs among the workers of S...
متن کاملEvaluation of Various Inorganic Media for Growth and Biopigments of Dunaliella Salina
Dunaliella salina is a unicellular green microalga that is considered as one of the best commercial sources of carotenoids. Growth and pigment production of D. salina (isolated from Sambhar Salt Lake, Rajasthan) was studied by using various inorganic media differing in chemical compositions viz. Artificial Sea Water media, De Walne’s media, Johnson’s media, AS-100 and Modified Bold’s Basal medi...
متن کاملActinomycetes Diversity among rRNA Gene Clones and Cellular Isolates from Sambhar Salt Lake, India
The vertical stratification of actinomycetes diversity in Sambhar salt lake (India's largest salt lake) was investigated by using cultivable and uncultivable approaches. The isolates from cultured approaches were clustered on the basis of cultural, morphological, biochemical, and cell wall characteristics, and results were further strengthened by 16S rDNA-RFLP into five major groups. 16S rDNA s...
متن کاملPhylogenetic appraisal of antagonistic, slow growing actinomycetes isolated from hypersaline inland solar salterns at Sambhar salt Lake, India
Inland solar salterns established in the vicinity of Sambhar Lake are extreme saline environments with high salinity and alkalinity. In view of the fact that microbes inhabiting such extreme saline environments flourish the contemporary bioprospecting, it was aimed to selectively isolate slow growing and rare actinomycetes from the unexplored solar salterns. A total of 14 slow growing actinomyc...
